Update on Blindness and Perioperative Nerve Injury

o Discuss the latest research and clinical work aimed at understanding the mechanisms that lead to catastrophic nerve and eye injury.

Discussion of an Actual Law Suit Involving a Nurse Anesthetist

o Present an overview of the actual trial of a malpractice case from a defense lawyer's perspective representing a CRNA.
Session to include:
1. the purpose of an opening statement
2. benefits of demonstrative evidence
3. burden of proof issues and the CRNA's live testimony

Clinical Applications and Dosing Epidural Anesthesia

o A review of the pharmacology and clinical use of various local anesthetic and adjunct drugs for spinal regional anesthesia.

Malpractice Insurance Policies and Negotiating an Employment Contract for the Anesthesia Provider

o Discuss available options for malpractice insurance for the anesthesia care provider.
o Discuss the optimal element necessary to secure an acceptable employment contract for the anesthesia provider.

Protecting The CRNA and Their Malpractice Policy

o To present current claims information from the various insurance carriers.
o To discuss new trends on the insurance side resulting in current claims.

Hand Washing and Infectious Disease Transmission in the Operating Room: Occam's Razor Revisited

o Appreciate the importance of hand washing in decreasing the transmission of infectious disease and consider strategies for reducing provider and patient risk.

o Describe the origins of oxygen and understand how this essential substrate can cause physiological havoc.
