Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge: 4 miles - Hilton Head Island, SC. - Two of the island's freshwater ponds were ranked in the top twenty wading bird colony sites of the South Carolina Coastal Plain during 1989 and 1996. Waterfowl, shorebirds, wading birds, raptors and neotropical migrants are commonly seen on the refuge.
Fort Pulaski National Monument: 15 miles - Savannah, GA. - Fort Pulaski National Monument, located near Tybee Island, features 5,623 acres of scenic marsh and uplands.
Sergeant Jasper State Park: 17 miles - Hardeeville, SC. - Located on a 442-acre site, convenient to I-95 near Hardeeville, Sergeant Jasper State Park is home to a variety of waterfowl and plant species, and has a pine wetland habitat.
Hunting Island State Park: 18 miles - Saint Helena Island, SC. - This popular park near historic Beaufort is a large secluded barrier island with semitropical beauty and an abundance of wildlife. A variety of flora and fauna may be seen throughout the park.
Savannah National Wildlife Refuge: 9 miles - Savannah, GA. - The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge lies on the lower Savannah River, near Savannah, Georgia. There are over 38 miles of river and over 25 miles of streams and creeks within the refuge boundaries.
Skidway Island State Park: 22 miles - Savannah, GA. - Facilities at this park include campground, picnic shelters, swimming pool, and a playground. Two trails wind through marshes, live oaks, cabbage palmettos and longleaf pines.
Wormsloe State Historic Park: 23 miles - Savannah, GA. - The ruins historic homesite and the surrounding grounds are open to the public for tours.
Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge 24 miles - Savannah, GA. - Wassaw NWR is composed of a single barrier island, Wassaw Island, that is managed as a migratory bird refuge.
Edisto Beach State Park: 30 miles - Edisto Island, SC. - This beachfront park includes 1,255 acres, with 11/2 miles of beach, a dense live oak forest and some of the tallest palmetto trees in the state.
Fort McAllister State Historic Park: 33 miles - Richmond Hill, GA. - Fort McAllister State Historic Park is located along the coast in southeastern Georgia. The park is noted for its well preserved earthwork fort. Visitors will find a museum, educational programs, campsites, boating and fishing activities, and a hiking trail.
ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge: 33 miles - Walterboro, SC. - Ace Basin is located 25 miles south of Charleston. ACE Basin represents one of the largest undeveloped wetland ecosystems remaining on the Atlantic coast. Opportunities include hiking the nature trails, deer hunting, waterfowl hunting, and photography.
Fort Morris State Historic Site: 40 miles - Midway, GA. - Fort Morris State Historic Site is located along the coast in southeastern Georgia. The remains of an old fort exist at the site for visitors to explore. Picnicking, hiking nature trails, bird-watching, and touring a museum are the activities available to visitors.
Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge: 47 miles - Townsend, GA. - Harris Neck NWR serves as an important link in the chain of refuges along the eastern seaboard. The refuge includes 665 acres of open fields, 649 acres of mixed forest and 1,295 acres of salt marsh.
Lake Warren State Park: 49 miles - Estill, SC - Lake. Warren State Park picnic facilities, a 200-acre lake are prominent features of this South Carolina state park. This 422-acre park has large tracts of wetlands and woodlands that support a wide range of plant species and wildlife habitats. |
